Frequently Asked Questions

Before your appointment begins, your massage therapist will take a few minutes to get to know your health history and discuss what you’d like to get out of the session. Your therapist will make sure there are no contra-indications to massage in your case, to ensure your treatment is safe and pleasant for you.

Consultation is the most appropriate time for you to ask any final questions and to identify any specific areas where you want additional focus applied or avoided completely.

Your therapist will then ask you to undress to your level of comfort (usually underwear) and lie face down on the bed, covering your body with a large towel and blanket. While you do this, she will leave to conduct her own preparation. A section of the towel will be folded away to reveal the area to be massaged with oil, rest of your body will be covered to make sure you feel comfortable and warm.

In Swedish style full body massage range of techniques will then be used starting from back and shoulders, going to legs, calves, then you will be asked to turn over and your front legs will be massages and feet (if you like), arms, forearms, palms, fingers moving to chest and neck area, following head and face massage if you like.

Each massage is adjusted accordingly, so you may find that your left thigh was worked on for longer than the right – this is completely normal and appropriate.

At the end of the session, your therapist should gently let you know she has finished your massage. She will then leave you alone so that you can get dressed, before returning to check how you feel and say her goodbyes.

Massages are not supposed to hurt. However, feeling some pain or discomfort with a deep tissue massage is perfectly normal, and it’s the best kind of pain and soreness you can feel! While you may feel some discomfort, you will also feel an overflow of relief as your muscles slowly relax and those knots break away.

Swedish massage and deep tissue massage are two popular forms of massage. Swedish massage uses long strokes and light-to-firm pressure to provide gentle relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a more forceful technique that releases tension deep in the muscles and connective tissues.

Hot stone massage isn’t painful at all! The stones are warm, but not hot, and the warmth will feel pleasant and emit a tingling sensation along your spine, or wherever they are used.

Your massage therapist will use a specialist heater for the stones, which is set to a precise temperature. This ensures that the stones do not become too hot and cause discomfort or burning.

The massage itself is a little deeper than a regular massage, simply because the warmth allows the muscles to relax and your massage therapist can then apply a little more pressure to work out those muscles and release any tension.

Sure, if you’d like to talk go right ahead. The important thing to remember is that this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying the experience. Many therapists discourage talking in hopes that you will relax, let your mind float free and enter a state of massage bliss.

In many instances, people may feel more relaxed starting off talking, and as the massage progresses, enter quiet states of relaxation.

The important thing is that there are times when you need to speak up. If the therapist is doing anything to make you uncomfortable, you should let her know immediately. Also, let her know if you get too warm or too cold, if the room is too bright, or if the pressure needs to be changed (lighter or deeper). If something is not working for you – speak up! It’s OK!

If you feel like you need to use a bathroom during a massage, just tell your massage therapist. We are trained to be equipped with a robe so you can get up, go to the bathroom, and come right back to the table to resume the massage. It doesn’t support your relaxation to have the urge and not do anything about it.
